Your Next Steps

After You File

Check your filing status, track a refund, and know where to turn if something changes.

Accepted is not the same as approved. An e-file acknowledgment confirms acceptance for processing; it does not guarantee that every item is correct or that a refund is approved.

01 · Confirm your return was accepted

Ask your preparer to confirm federal and state acknowledgments separately. If a return is rejected, contact your preparer promptly to discuss the correction and applicable deadline. Do not assume that transmission alone completes filing.

02 · Track a refund or understand a delay

Use the IRS refund tracker with your tax year, filing status, SSN or ITIN, and exact federal refund amount from the filed return. Enter sensitive information only on the official IRS website. Check state refunds with the relevant state revenue agency.

IRS status is generally available 24 hours after e-filing a current-year return, three days after e-filing a prior-year return, or four weeks after mailing a paper return. Processing and payment times vary; no refund date is guaranteed.

03 · Keep or request your return copies

Keep a secure copy of your filed federal and state returns, authorizations, supporting documents, and payment confirmations. Contact GOTAXTOOLS to request available copies; identity verification may be required. We will confirm availability and any applicable fees before proceeding.

Many supporting records need to be kept for at least three years, but longer or indefinite retention applies in some situations. Property records and state requirements may need a different retention period.

04 · Found an error or received another tax form?

Contact your preparer before submitting another return. Changes to income, filing status, deductions, credits, or tax liability may require an amended return. Some math errors are corrected by the IRS without an amendment. Federal changes may also affect your state return.

05 · Received an IRS letter or tax bill?

Read every page, identify the tax year and response deadline, and keep the notice. Arrange secure delivery directly with your preparer. Booking a review does not extend the deadline, and representation depends on the assigned professional’s qualifications and authorization.

06 · Have a balance due or want to prepare for next year?

Follow the payment instructions and due date for your return. Filing an extension generally does not extend payment time. If you cannot pay in full, review IRS payment options and discuss your circumstances with your preparer. A payment-plan request does not itself erase penalties or interest.

Keep your records organized and tell your preparer about major income or family changes. Ask whether withholding or estimated-tax payments need review.
